Adhesion
What is Adhesion?
Adhesion is the bonding force between two different materials, created by molecular attractive forces at the interface. It is the foundation of every bonding process and determines how strongly an adhesive adheres to the substrate surface. Without sufficient adhesion, no permanent bond can be formed.
Factors for Optimal Adhesion
- Surface cleanliness: Grease-, dust- and oxide-free surfaces
- Surface energy: Activation through plasma or chemical treatment
- Coating: Complete coating of the substrate surface by the adhesive
- Material compatibility: Matching adhesive and bonding parts
Adhesion on Different Materials
- Metals: Good adhesion through polar surfaces
- Plastics: Often pretreatment needed (plasma, primer)
- Glass: Excellent adhesion through high surface energy
- Ceramics: Special adhesives for optimal adhesion
