Cohesion

What is Cohesion?

Cohesion refers to the internal strength of an adhesive that results from the attractive forces between the molecules of the adhesive material itself. These internal bonding forces significantly determine the mechanical properties and load capacity of the cured adhesive layer.

Properties of Cohesion

  • Internal strength of the adhesive material
  • Resistance to deformation and fracture
  • Temperature-dependent properties at various operating temperatures
  • Time-dependent development during curing
  • Influence by degree of crosslinking
  • Dependence on molecular structure

Cohesion vs. Adhesion

  • Cohesion: Internal bonding within the adhesive
  • Adhesion: Bonding between adhesive and substrate
  • Balanced ratio for optimal bond strength
  • Cohesive failure: Failure within the adhesive
  • Adhesive failure: Detachment from substrate surface

Factors Influencing Cohesion

  • Degree of crosslinking: Higher crosslinking = higher cohesion
  • High Temperature Adhesives: Increased cohesion at heat
  • Aging: Change in cohesion over time
  • Plasticizers: Reduction of cohesion for flexibility

Test Methods

  • Tensile strength measurement: Maximum load capacity
  • Shear strength testing: Resistance to shear loading
  • Creep testing: Long-term loading behavior
  • Fracture pattern analysis: Distinction cohesive/adhesive failure

Application-Specific Requirements

  • Pressure Sensitive Adhesives: Balanced cohesion for repositionable bonds
  • Structural adhesives: High cohesion for load transmission
  • Elastomer bonding: Flexible cohesion for movement absorption
  • Die Attach: Minimal cohesion losses in thin layers

Cohesion Optimization

  • Crosslinking optimization through defined curing cycles
  • Additives for cohesion enhancement
  • Temperature-resistant formulations for durability
  • Molecular weight adjustment of polymer
