DELO has established the conditions needed to measure the product carbon footprint of its high-tech adhesives. As a result, adhesive users are now able to assess the carbon footprint of their products with greater accuracy. The calculations utilize standards from initiatives, including Catena-X and "Together for Sustainability".
The product carbon footprint (PCF) encompasses CO2 emissions generated across the various life cycle phases of a product. DELO adopts the cradle-to-gate approach, which focuses on calculating the emissions generated during adhesive manufacturing - from raw material extraction and supply chain emissions to production site processing.
CO₂ balances for the raw materials used are compiled using industry-standard databases and supplemented with CO₂ data provided by suppliers. Transport-related emissions are estimated based on supplier data. An internal screening study supplies detailed data on emissions from selected adhesives during production, which are factored into the overall calculations.
Emissions are calculated following guidelines set by Catena-X, a data ecosystem for the automotive industry, and "Together for Sustainability", a chemical industry initiative focused on measuring sustainability performance in the supply chain.
"Many raw material manufacturers and logistic providers now allocate specific CO2 emission values to their operations. This allows us to deliver accurate PCF estimates for our adhesives," says Dr. Karl Bitzer, Managing Director of DELO. "In turn, our customers can incorporate this data into their life cycle assessment to determine the CO2 footprint of their end products more precisely and achieve their own sustainability goals."
The PCF is available upon request.
