Panoramic head-up displays: New adhesive solution facilitates mass production for full-width windshield projections

Panoramic head-up displays are currently being introduced in new vehicle classes by leading automobile manufacturers. The innovative technology projects displays visible to all passengers across the full width of the windshield. With DELO PHOTOBOND SJ4195, DELO presents a specially developed adhesive solution that enables structural bonding of complex display components at production speed.

Panoramic Head-up Displays (P-HUD) project driving information, navigation instructions, or infotainment content across the entire width of the windshield—from A-pillar to A-pillar. This data is reflected with high brightness and contrast onto a dark-coated area of the front windshield, creating a sharp, always-visible image.

One challenge of this technology lies in the structural bonding of complex display components. These consist of various materials, ranging from magnesium die cast to plastics, glass, and circuit boards. At the same time, the high volumes required in automotive series production demand short cycle times and complete process control.

DELO PHOTOBOND SJ4195 was developed specifically for these requirements. The UV-curing structural adhesive is characterized by its excellent adhesion to magnesium die cast (12 MPa) and features low outgassing, making it suitable for structurally bonding optical components.

The adhesive's viscosity has been specifically adapted to typical component geometry and process requirements. This enables controlled dispensing even at high layer thickness, while larger gaps are reliably bridged.

With a curing time of just a few seconds, the system achieves the short cycle times necessary for series production. Another advantage: the colorless adhesive has no negative impact on optical components while enabling application control via vision control systems—crucial for process control and quality assurance in high-volume production.
