Adhesives for Hybrid-Electric Batteries

Designed for high-volume serial production, DELO-DUOPOX TC8686 is thermally conductive and flame-retardant.

This adhesive is particularly suitable for low-voltage batteries found in mild hybrid vehicles, e-bikes and e-scooters. This allows battery cells to be bonded into the battery housing while also efficiently dissipating heat generated during operation.

DELO-DUOPOX TC8686 combines structural bonding and connection of the thermal management system in one step instead of mechanically connecting the battery cells and then using so-called gap fillers for heat dissipation. This saves one process step and simplifies production. 

Suitable for mass connector production

DELO-DUOPOX TC8686 is designed to withstand temperatures between –40 °C and +180 °C and offers good strength on battery cells and typical housing materials. For example, its tensile shear strength on aluminum is 18 N/mm². The adhesive also meets the automotive industry’s strength requirements at typical operating temperatures between +10 °C and +40 °C up to its maximum service temperature of +180 °C, at which point battery electrolytes are already irreversibly damaged. Its maximum elongation at tear also meets these requirements, helping it compensate for the different thermal expansion behaviors of cell and housing materials during operation.

The product's thermal conductivity— a very important factor for battery cells—is 1.1 W/m*K. Another major benefit of this adhesive is that it meets flame retardancy requirements according to industry standard UL 94 V-0.

Developed with high-volume serial production in mind

DELO-DUOPOX TC8686 has also been optimized for manufacturing processes. It offers a simple 2:1 mixing ratio and an almost-30-minute processing time after mixing. This time span is sufficient for fully automated systems, but also works for the production of prototypes and small series. After four hours, the adhesive reaches its initial strength, and 90 % of its final strength is achieved after 24 hours. Even with a low heat input, this duration can be reduced significantly. Depending on the battery electrolyte used, temperatures of +60 °C are conceivable.

Beige in color, the product is easily detectable by cameras, ensuring accurate application control. In addition, the filler for thermal conductivity, while still abrasive, is minimally so, contributing to the dispensing systems' long lifetimes. The product is classified as transport category 1 and is suitable for room-temperature storage and transport. This helps simplify logistics processes as well.
