DELO and DATRON accelerate fuel cell sealing with a new high-speed, automated system solution

Fast, reliable, and scalable — DELO and DATRON present a joint system solution that revolutionizes fuel cell sealing. Discover how the partnership accelerates production and supports the transition from pilot projects to mass manufacturing.

The Customer Challenge

Fuel cell manufacturers face a key challenge:
Sealing individual cells is a slow, energy-intensive process that directly affects the stack’s lifetime and reliability.
Traditional methods involve long curing times and complex workflows, making them unsuitable for industrial-scale production.

The Joint Solution

DELO and DATRON have joined forces to solve this challenge with a fully automated, high-speed sealing system.
By combining DELO’s fast-curing liquid sealant and UV technology with DATRON’s high-precision dosing system, the companies deliver speed, reliability, and production readiness. Early trials show impressive results.

Perfect Sealing in Seconds – For Maximum Process Reliability

DELO’s Approach and the Technical Concept

At the heart of this innovation lies DELO PHOTOBOND SL sealant, specially developed for fuel cell applications.
Applied directly as a liquid gasket, it cures within seconds under UV light

The process is enabled by the DATRON evo 600 system, capable of dispensing at up to 50 meters per minute.
Its volumetric dosing control ensures a consistent bead profile – even at start and stop points.

Two smart features ensure seamless inline quality assurance

  • An integrated confocal sensor measures bead height immediately after dispensing.
  • The fluorescent properties of the sealant allow optical quality checks in real time.

Together, these elements create hundreds of precisely sealed fuel cells, ready to be assembled into a high-performance stack.

Key Advantages

  • UV-curing in seconds for maximum speed
  • High chemical resistance against sulfuric acid and deionized water
  • Maximum design freedom thanks to liquid application
  • Volumetric dosing for consistent, uniform bead geometry
  • Inline inspection for reliable, closed-loop quality control

Stack Sealing – Enabling the Industrialization of Fuel Cells

While conventional sealing processes remain slow, labor-intensive, and energy-demanding, the DELO-DATRON process proves to be a scalable, future-ready alternative, suitable for the transition from pilot to mass production

Sealing the individual fuel cells is often underestimated but is a critical step in the entire stack production process. Only when perfect tightness is achieved can the system operate reliably over time. With industrialization underway, speed is becoming just as important – and this new joint solution contributes exactly that.

Conclusion

With this new system solution, DELO and DATRON streamline fuel cell manufacturing, ensuring shorter cycle times, higher throughput, and greater reliability.
This is a significant milestone on the road toward the industrialization of hydrogen and fuel cell technology – made in Germany.
