Thanks to optimized cartons and inserts, there is space for 104 instead of 60 cartridges on a Euro pallet. This intelligent packaging is just one example of how DELO is a leader in sustainability.
For some time now, we have been packaging and shipping our adhesives in our own optimized and sustainable way. With us constantly reevaluating and refining our packaging and shipping concept, we have made it to second place in the Responsible Care Competition run by the German Chemical Industry Association (VCI).
As a specialized manufacturer, we primarily develop adhesives for applications that require only a small amount, but for which there are strict requirements. The adhesives are therefore mainly packaged in smaller plastic containers ranging in volume from 5 ml to 1 liter. For larger quantities of up to 30 liters, hobbocks are used instead.
A logistics team comprising associates from shipping, internal sales and customer quality service departments meets regularly to think about how deliveries can be made more economical and sustainable. In addition to sustainability, this is of course also about maintaining a high level of safety, as should always be the case when handling chemicals in transit.
One of our most important achievements is the new packaging design. One example we can give are the containers we now use to ship our popular 20 oz (600g) cartridges. These boxes only carry 13 cartridges as opposed to the previous 30, resulting in weight reduction from 18–24 kg to 8–12 kg. This makes these containers easy for logistics employees to carry.
Despite their reduced size, however, these cartons also optimize transport volume, allowing space for more cartridges due to their smaller dimensions. Because of this, instead of 60 cartridges, one layer of cartons covering the area of a Euro pallet can now fit 104 cartridges. That’s nearly 75% more cartridges in the same space, making much better use of available space.
As is routine in logistics, there are also empty spaces when shipping adhesives that need to be filled with insulation material. For this purpose, we reuse clean packaging material as much as possible. In addition, we rely on recyclable bubble wrap, which we inflate ourselves on site. This also saves a considerable amount of required volume.
There have also been attempts to replace polystyrene foam insultation with biodegradable corn starch-based materials. Once flattened, however, the foam we tested remained flat and left lint residue. In addition, as soon as they came into contact with moisture, they clung to the containers. They are therefore not suitable for cleanroom conditions, which ultimately led to the decision against the use of corn starch as a base for insulation.
Since transport safety is also an important aspect of sustainable logistics, cardboard edge protection has been used for pallet goods for some time. This ensures that the palletized goods are not damaged by the tension straps. This shows that even small steps are important in terms of the environment and safety.
In an effort to continuously improve our logistics, the logistics team constantly develops new, more sustainable shipping processes. In general, such projects are about considering their long-term nature, as results often only become apparent much later. With that said, we anxiously await what positive impact our new, more efficient packaging will have on our customers and our planet.
