Enhancing efficiency in the manufacturing of augmented, virtual and mixed reality devices with DELO
The development of XR devices presents a wide range of challenges: designs need to be compact and robust, while also visually appealing and efficient to manufacture. How can all these requirements be successfully combined?
DELO provides the ideal solutions. Our high-performance adhesives are key elements in the production of state-of-the-art AR, VR and MR devices. They are carefully developed to improve the performance and quality of critical components. These adhesives enable lightweight and precise integration of all parts and often offer additional functionalities such as thermal or electrical conductivity, defined optical properties or, in the case of these devices’ speakers, acoustic damping. From seamless integration to cost-efficient production, we provide a broad portfolio of high-quality materials that easily meet any design challenge.
Waveguides
Optimize your AR experience with advanced polymer solutions
Waveguides are the core of AR devices. Despite the widespread use of diffractive waveguides with printed surface relief gratings, it is still uncertain whether diffractive, reflective, or holographic waveguides will prevail in the future. What is certain, however, is that customized polymer solutions can improve every waveguide and are often indispensable in the manufacturing process.
For reflective waveguides, choosing the right adhesive solution is especially critical. They are produced by joining individual coated flat glasses into large stacks. To achieve the best possible optical performance of the waveguide, an optical adhesive is required that has a refractive index closely matched to the glass and at the same time offers low scattering and high transparency.
In addition, adhesives must provide strong adhesion to the glass coatings and exhibit excellent mechanical properties to withstand the stresses during the production process. DELO’s polymer portfolio meets all of these requirements.
Regardless of the waveguide technology chosen, all waveguides must be capable of seamless integration into AR devices. This often involves stacking of waveguides, bonding of cover glasses, and blackening of edges.
For flexible adjustment of refractive indices, especially during prototype manufacturing, we offer intelligent solutions that can be tailored to your needs. Would you like to learn more? Contact us!
Cover Glass Bonding
Achieve precision and clarity in AR devices
The optical performance of a waveguide depends on the maximum refractive index difference between the glass and the surrounding medium. When stacking waveguides or attaching cover glasses, optionally with corrective power, a defined air gap is often required. This is crucial for preserving the delicate grating structures of diffractive waveguides.
We offer transparent and black adhesives that cure within seconds, supported by spacer elements that, in a passive alignment process, ensure precisely defined air gaps with unmatched parallelism.
Gap sizes ranging from 10 μm to 250 μm with minimal web widths can thus be reliably achieved, enabling adhesive beads up to 600 μm wide and 50 μm high. This results in an efficient and reproducible bonding and alignment process that maximizes throughput per hour.

Edge Blackening
Reduce reflections and optimize your optics
To avoid ghost images or other distortions in a waveguide, eliminating unwanted reflections at the edges is crucial. DELO’s edge blackening polymers are the ideal solution, offering high optical density and a wide range of refractive indices. Even at a layer thickness of only 40 μm, these materials absorb 99 % of light, minimizing parasitic reflections and ensuring optimal device performance.
Choose from a variety of viscosities and absorption levels, adapted to your desired layer thickness. Customer-specific developments are available on request. In addition, benefit from DELO’s unique combination of materials and processing technologies. Complementing our black materials, we also offer high-end jet dispensing valves for reliable application on complex waveguide edges, ensuring fast and efficient production. This customized solution is far superior to conventional manual processes, which are slow, inhomogeneous, and costly, enabling high-volume manufacturing.
Depending on your optical density requirements, an energy-efficient UV-only curing process is also possible, minimizing both energy consumption and the carbon footprint of production.
