DIN 2304: Setting Quality Standards for Adhesive Technology

Modern industrial adhesives are high-tech products that enable smooth production processes, presumed they are applied correctly. If an adhesive bond fails during later use, it is typically due to application errors in the production process. This is where the DIN 2304 standard "Adhesive Technology – Quality Requirements for Adhesive Processes" comes into play, effective since spring 2016.

Who is liable?

According to experts, about 90 percent of errors involving adhesive technology arise from a lack of knowledge in the field. With the introduction of DIN 2304, a new quality standard, the industry has taken a step towards enhanced quality assurance in adhesive technology. This standard provides clear benchmarks for both adhesive manufacturers and users and sets a legal benchmark for the industry as well.

Why is DIN 2304 important?

Too often, the adhesive industry faces the challenge that the quality of adhesive bonds is difficult to verify since testing often involves damaging or destroying them. Therefore, an alternative approach is needed. DIN 2304 establishes clear rules and quality standards that structure application and control processes. This enables quality assurance without having to subsequently test adhesive bonds.

While not itself a law, DIN 2304 and users’ adherence to it can help demonstrate responsible conduct, which is crucial in the event of an incident. In a legal dispute, this standard offers a means to determine liability regarding the quality of a component or adhesive bond, and courts are likely to refer to DIN 2304 in such cases. If a user fails to comply with the standard, they may face scrutiny for not aligning with current technological standards. Conversely, companies adhering to the standard can relieve themselves of guilt through documentation and evidence. Despite being legally non-binding, the standard is extremely relevant in practice.

How does the standard structure adhesive processes?

DIN 2304 organizes adhesive processes in companies through four core aspects:

  1. Adequately trained adhesive personnel: Having trained professionals is crucial for companies to properly adhere to this standard. Their expertise will be central to the design, planning, manufacturing, and maintenance of adhesive technology.
  2. Suitable work and manufacturing environments: Maintaining an ideal work environment is necessary for performing adhesive applications precisely and professionally. This new standard focuses on technical regulations as well as safety and environmental protection.
  3. Classification of adhesive applications:  Dividing adhesive applications into safety classes, from S1 (high) to S4 (none), ensures they meet specific application requirements. Quality assurance is the responsibility of the designer or construction manager, who assesses adhesive bonds based on potential impacts.
  4. Lifecycle requirements: It must be proven that the adhesive bond meets the requirements and sustains expected loads over its lifetime. Here, the designer and component manager share responsibility.

DELO's Perspective on DIN 2304

We spoke with Gudrun Weigel, Head of Engineering at DELO Industrial Adhesives GmbH & Co. KGaA, about her views on DIN 2304:

What advantages do you see in this development?

This new standard addresses the complexity of adhesion and lays the foundation for a professional and safety-focused approach to adhesive technology tasks. Adhesive users receive specific and clearly formulated guidelines on what organizational tasks must be addressed beforehand to produce high-quality adhesive bonds with high reliability in practical use.

Do you see any disadvantages with DIN 2304?

Initially, the standard does add more bureaucracy. However, these are organizational measures and documentation to ensure reliable manufacturing processes. Users are encouraged to review their processes, invest in training and education for their personnel, and ensure their designs are appropriate for anticipated stresses, documenting them accordingly. All these are constructive measures that ensure effective adhesive bonds, ultimately saving costs in the long run.

Do you support your customers in implementing the standard?

While every customer must organize their processes independently, we anticipate increased requests for advice and support in selecting adhesives and materials, designing efficient manufacturing steps, and ensuring overall reproducible production processes. These are part of our customer support, and we further assist by providing training for their personnel through the DELO Academy

Challenges and conclusion

The implementation of DIN 2304 introduces organizational and archival challenges, presenting initial bureaucratic hurdles. However, it ultimately enhances process security for companies.

The DIN 2304 standard establishes new benchmarks for quality assurance in adhesive technology, defining clear quality standards and structured processes. It enables companies to reliably document the quality of their adhesive bonds and offers legal protection. Additionally, DIN 2304 is the first comprehensive standard for quality requirements in adhesive technology. Previously, only specific standards like DIN 6701 for rail vehicles existed, which has been internationally recognized and is being converted into an EN standard — a process that could also occur with DIN 2304.
