With DELO Adhesives, PEEK Bonding Is Made Easier and More Durable

PEEK, a high-performance plastic, has long been considered difficult to bond. However, recent joint testing by Evonik and DELO disproves this belief. In this installment of our Most Difficult Materials series, we will look into how, thanks to these epoxy resins, bonded connections can offer you excellent strength, even under demanding environmental conditions.

For many plastic processing companies, the bonding of high-temperature resistant materials such as polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is still a challenge. This is due to its low surface energy, which results in poor wettability and chemical resistance. However, DELO, in partnership with chemicals giant Evonik, have come out with outstanding test results for PEEK bonding that may surprise you.

High strength, even without pretreatment

In one example, the high-strength PEEK L4000G is very well-suited for bonding with DELO MONOPOX one-component heat-curing adhesives, as well as DELO DUALBOND adhesives with the additional option of light-curing or light-fixation. When bonding the PEEK components, compression shear strengths of more than 40 MPa were achieved, which is an extremely high value for plastics. To yield these results, the components had been pretreated with atmospheric pressure plasma. Strength values remained high, even under the tough conditions of 14-day storage at 85% air humidity and 85 °C.

In an additional test using another DELO MONOPOX product, the PEEK bond showed good strength, even without atmospheric pressure plasma pretreatment, achieving values of more than 20 Mpa.

Bonding without atmospheric pressure plasma pretreatment significantly simplifies the production process. However, some particularly demanding applications may still require pretreatment.

Four bars represent: Reference without plasma, 14 d 85/85 without plasma, Reference with plasma, and 14 d 85/85 with plasma. The highest strength is shown for the reference with plasma treatment.
Both PEEK and our epoxy resins are high-performance materials. The specimens were even deformed during compression shear testing, which shows the good quality of the bonded connection. These results open the path to numerous new applications based on PEEK.

Not only in the aviation industry, for example in the field of modular components, but also in the automotive and mechanical engineering sectors, new opportunities are opening up: demanding sealing tasks can now be tackled with PEEK bonds.
