Success Abroad: From the Megacity to Bavaria's Fünfseenland

Leaving their Bavarian roots to work and gain new experiences in countries like China, South Korea, or the USA: many DELO employees have embraced this adventure. Last year, SeaYong became the first colleague to embark on an extended stay in Germany, bringing his entire family along. How does he perceive life here?

Settling into a new home

You've been living in Germany for over a year now—how did this move come about?

Before coming to Germany, I spent eight years working in sales at our DELO office in Anyang near Seoul. While I enjoyed my work, the desire for new tasks and challenges grew stronger. I wanted to stay with DELO, so I discussed with my supervisor the possibility of transferring to the Camera Team in Engineering in Windach.

What are the biggest differences between Germany and South Korea?

There are quite a few, especially in day-to-day life, which naturally leads to some blunders. When we were apartment hunting, we were surprised to find that places were shown to us without built-in kitchens and light bulbs. Also, at first I thought the "frei" sign in parking lots meant “free of charge.” In South Korea, we don’t use keys for our homes—we open and lock our doors with a code. This led us to accidentally lock ourselves out once, on New Year's Eve of all times.

What do you remember most fondly from the past year?

What stands out is how well my children adapted. Moving here means they attend school in a multinational environment that isn't available in Korea. They picked up the language quickly and made friends. This is partly due to the less competitive nature of the German school system compared to South Korea. My kids have more free time here.

What advice would you give to other international colleagues considering a move to Germany?

This step is a great opportunity, but it should be well-thought-out. The first few months in Germany were quite challenging. I recommend starting learning the language before moving;  English alone often isn't enough for everyday life here. Additionally, the bureaucratic hurdles aren't easy to navigate. Persistence is key, especially when moving with a family.
