One feature being introduced to DELO-DUOPOX two-component adhesives is light fixation. By securing components in place within seconds, allowing for immediate subsequent processing, this technology can vastly expedite production processes while streamlining logistics and promoting cost-effectiveness.
DELO-DUOPOX adhesives with light fixation provide very good strength even when exposed to high temperatures and humidity, achieving tensile shear strengths of up to 28 MPa on aluminum and maintaining this value. Even during ageing simulations required by the automotive industry, it maintains this value after 500 hours' storage at 85 °C and 85% relative air humidity or at 150 °C. As such, it can be used to structurally bond rare earth magnets in electric motors, for example. And with low outgassing and shrinkage, the product is even suitable for optoelectronics applications in cameras.
Thanks to light fixation for two-component epoxy resins, users benefit from faster, less complex production processes and simplified logistics.
Two-component adhesives with light fixation provide unprecedented speeds for their class. They secure components against slipping in mere seconds so that the entire assembly can immediately begin processing. After an irradiation time of only 5 seconds at an intensity of 1000 mW/cm², a fixing strength of 1 N/mm² is achieved.
Final curing, including shadowed areas, is the same as with regular two-component products at room temperature, or can be sped up to cure after 60 minutes at 80 °C. Final curing at ambient temperatures is likely more beneficial to most users as, by drastically reducing cycle times and increasing throughput rates, it saves them investment and energy costs for heat curing, not to mention space on the production floor. Since dispensing, joining, and light fixation take less than a minute, the next step can begin much earlier than after the usual 15–90 minutes.
In addition, its new hybrid chemistry remarkably simplifies logistics for users as products do not need to be transported and stored in a cooled state. A storage life of 12 months enhances production flexibility and enables the use of larger—thus more cost-effective—containers.
The light fixation of 2C adhesives shortens production processes from one hour to just a few seconds, for example when bonding of magnets in electric motors.
Two-component adhesives are well-known for their good strength and reliability at room temperature, their media resistance, and easy transport. In the case of many high-volume applications, the time it once took before reaching initial strength was deemed a major disadvantage—that is until now. This is only the beginning of light fixation in DELO’s two-component adhesives, with the development of several more products underway.
