Bio-based adhesive without compromise

DELO PHOTOBOND SJ4192 combines over 60 % renewable raw materials with excellent adhesion on metal, glass and plastics.

Sustainability targets are becoming more demanding—especially in the automotive industry. But switching to greener materials often means accepting trade-offs in performance.

DELO has developed DELO PHOTOBOND SJ4192, a bio-based multi-purpose adhesive that meets high technical requirements and supports sustainability goals at the same time. It is the first DELO adhesive where renewable ingredients make up more than half of the formulation.

What makes DELO PHOTOBOND SJ4192 different?

DELO has been replacing fossil raw materials with renewable alternatives for many years. The guiding principle: sustainable formulation must not come at the cost of performance. DELO PHOTOBOND SJ4192 is proof that both goals are achievable together.

The adhesive consists of 62 % renewable raw materials. Precursors from corn and castor oil replace the main resin components. This conserves finite resources—while the adhesive outperforms its non-bio-based predecessor in several mechanical properties.

Your benefits at a glance:
  • Excellent moisture resistance—high long-term stability even in demanding environments
  • High flexibility and peel strength—also improved plastic adhesion, especially on polycarbonate
  • Versatile bonding—suitable for metal, glass and plastics
  • Low outgassing—ideal for sensitive applications such as navigation displays
  • Fast, low-emission curing—via UV or visible light in just a few seconds

Where is the adhesive used?

DELO PHOTOBOND SJ4192 is a true multi-purpose adhesive. It bonds metal, glass and plastics reliably—and performs particularly well on polycarbonate surfaces. These are used, for example, in frame and housing bonds for navigation displays in cars.

Application is straightforward: the adhesive is typically dispensed via needle. Curing takes place with low CO₂ emissions through UV or visible light—in just a few seconds.

What comes next?

DELO is already working on expanding its bio-based portfolio. Future systems will include light-moisture and light-heat curing options—further broadening the range of sustainable bonding solutions.

Developing bio-based adhesives is one of our long-term sustainability projects. Our chemistry team works continuously to identify and integrate sustainable alternative raw materials. It is particularly impressive when the technical properties can be improved as well—this shows the great potential of these raw materials. We look forward to offering our customers further high-tech adhesives with high bio content in the future.

Conclusion

DELO PHOTOBOND SJ4192 demonstrates that bio-based adhesives can do more than just reduce environmental impact. With over 60 % renewable raw materials, it sets a new benchmark in sustainable bonding—without sacrificing performance. It is the first DELO adhesive to exceed a 50 % bio content, and it outperforms its non-bio-based predecessor in key mechanical properties. For industries like automotive, it offers a credible path toward greener production.
