Liquid tape for fuel cell manufacturing

DELO PHOTOBOND PS4140 replaces conventional tape - fully automated, zero waste, and ready in seconds.

Conventional tape-based solutions for gas diffusion layer fixation require cutting, generate material waste, and are difficult to integrate into fully automated production lines. For fuel cell manufacturers under pressure to scale efficiently, this is a real bottleneck.

DELO now offers a smarter alternative: DELO PHOTOBOND PS4140, the worlds first liquid tape for gas diffusion layer fixation in fuel cells. The liquid pressure-sensitive adhesive enables fully automated processing, freely selectable dispensing geometry, and fast curing - with no cutting and no material waste.

Why liquid tape outperforms conventional tape

Traditional tape has served fuel cell production for years - but it comes with limitations. Cutting generates waste, manual handling slows throughput, and consistent geometry is hard to guarantee. DELO PHOTOBOND PS4140 changes that.
As a liquid pressure-sensitive adhesive, it bonds reliably to typical fuel cell materials and delivers:

  • Peel resistance of up to 0.9 N/mm on PET/PET
  • Glass transition temperature of -10 degrees C for flexible, stable bonds at low temperatures
  • Water absorption of only 0.7 wt.% for dimensional stability under persistent humidity
  • Confirmed mechanical stability after storage in application-relevant media

These properties make it well suited to compensate for peel loads in roll-to-roll processes - a common method in fuel cell manufacturing.

Efficient processing from dispensing to joining

DELO PHOTOBOND PS4140 is a one-component system, easy to store at 0 to +25 degrees C. Evaluated application methods include:

  • Automated dispensing via the DELO-DOT PN5 pneumatic jet valve
  • Slot-die coating
  • Screen printing
  • Stencil printing

Curing is energy-efficient via UV or VIS light. In the VIS range at 400 nm, curing takes 5 to 16 seconds depending on irradiation intensity. The cured surface is immediately tacky - after joining under light pressure, parts are ready for immediate further processing.
